Valuing Education: Gulmit village gives warm reception to its first Oxford graduate

The people of Gulmit, situated in Gojal Hunza, gave a warm reception to Naeema Gul, who recently became the first person of the village to graduate from Oxford University. Gul, 26, did her masters in Global Governance and Diplomacy from the first university of Europe that has produced thousands of world leaders, writers, and scientists in its more than 800- year- old official history.

The Gulmit Educational and Social Welfare Society, in collaboration with Gulmit Young Stars Club, organized a reception ceremony for Ms. Gul at the historical Gulmit polo ground, where several hundred men and women were present to receive what they called their star. The audience expressed their happiness over the achievement of the daughter from the village.

Speakers and village notables appreciated and acknowledged the efforts and hard work of Ms. Gul in the field of education. Mr. Muhammad Ajaib, Vice President the Gulmit Educational and Social Welfare Organization, praised the efforts of another star of Gojal Valley, Samina Baig, who had conquered Mount Everest, adding that Naeema conquered the highest peak in the field of education.

Ms. Gul received her early education from Gilgit, including her undergraduation degree in International Relations from the Karakoram International University, Gilgit.  Speakers hailed Ms. Gul as a role model for the youth of today in education, ethics, volunteerism, and for being a helpful human being.

It is pertinent to mention here that Ms. Gul’s father, Gul Muhammad, passed away as a result of cardiac arrest when she and her other siblings were in their childhood. Speakers at the ceremony hailed her mother’s efforts in the upbringing of her children and their their academic, moral, and societal grooming.

Ms. Gul expressed her gratitude to organizers of the program and the public for the warm reception and shared her Oxford experience with the youth.

The Gulmit Young Stars Club presented a token of appreciation to Ms. Gul on behalf of the youth of the village. She also received a special gift from the popular Gulmit Premier League (GPL). She was named as chief guest at the football match which was being played on the day.
