The school administration at the Government Boys High School No. 1 Gilgit has started forcing students to paint classroom walls themselves, instead of concentrating on their education.

It is pertinent to mention here that renovation of school buildings and related tasks are clearly the duty of the school administration. Moreover, the government allocates special fund for school renovation and maintenance work for all government-run schools.

It has been noted that the school administration at a majority of the schools in Gilgit-Baltistan have been forcing students to do the renovation and maintenance work. These malpractices by the school administrations have forced several children to abandon school. Besides, the practice has had adverse impact on the academic performance of students.

So far, the GB Directorate of Education GB has failed to curb the practice. Even though the reason for the negligence is yet to be confirmed, but some past reports have attributed it to corruption throughout the hierarchy of the education department – from the directorate to the school administration.
