The Strategic Plan for Mountain Agricultural Research Centre Gilgit was launched at Pakistan Agriculture Research Council (PARC), Islamabad, by the Minister for National Food Security and Research Sikandar Hayat Khan Bosan.
The plan comes with a larger mission to develop, nurture and promote the agriculture sector in the mountain areas of Pakistan, particularly Gilgit-Baltistan and Chitral. Authorities at PARC said the strategic plan is intended to ensure ‘food security’ and ‘boost the socio-economic condition of farmers and agri-business entrepreneurs in the region.’
The strategic plan has reportedly been crafted with the help of the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD), Nepal. It was given a final shape after inputs from dozens of stakeholders, including agriculture development experts, industry experts, farmers, government officials, community leaders, development organizations and policy makers.
The launching ceremony was witnessed by Federal Secretary of the Ministry of National Food Security and Research Seerat Asghar, former Founding Chairman PARC Dr. Amir Muhammad, Chairman PARC Dr. Iftikhar Ahmad and ICIMOD Country Representative Dr. Abdul Wahid Jasra.
