The power department officials reportedly raided Barolmo colony and Bagardo and found that 443 households out of the 600 in the area have been using power illegally. Legal notices have been served to a large number of the power thieves besides taking down their power supply lines, sources said.
A representative of the power department said the crackdown was part of a larger action to bring wide scale load shedding in Skardu under control. He also requested Ulemas to control power theft through their religious addresses in mosques.
The crackdown was led by SDO power department Mohd. Yunus and sub-engineer Zulfiqar Ali.
It is pertinent to mention here that a large number of people in several districts of Gilgit-Baltistan use illegal means for power supply to their houses and businesses. This is not only causing monetary loss to the government, but has also increased the burden on legal power consumers besides stretching the load shedding duration.
