Two members of the provincial assembly (MPAs) belonging to the PPP and the PTI here on Sunday said the MoU on Shandur was signed between the KP and Gilgit-Baltistan governments with full sincerity of intentions to successfully organize the internationally-recognized annual Shandur festival. However, they added, some political parties have made the MoU controversial and using it as a card for the forthcoming local government elections, Chitral Today Reported.
Addressing separate press conferences here, Fouzia Bibi and Sardar Hussain said the holding of the popular annual festival was in the interests of both the people of Chitral and Gilgit-Baltistan.
Sardar Hussain said he had made it sure that the MoU had nothing to do with the ownership dispute of any part of Shandur and neither it can be used as a document or proof in future. He said he had not been invited to the seminar held in Peshawar on the holding of the festival but even then he managed to attend the event considering it as his responsibility and expressed his unequivocal stance on the dispute of Shandur.
The PPP MPA said Gilgit-Baltistan never ruled on any part of Chitral in the past and on the other hand Chitral’s rule extended to different parts of Gilgit-Baltistan, including the Ghizer district. So there is no question of Giglit-Baltistan making Shandur a disputed land. MPA Fouzia Bibi said under a conspiracy to make her and the PTI provincial leadership controversial the MoU was being used by some political parties as a bid to compromise on the ownership of Shandur. He said the seminar in Peshawar was attended by provincial ministers, MNAs, MPAs and DCs but now the guns were being pointed only towards the two MPAs from Chitral.
