The people of Dasu Tehsil, the headquarters of Kohistan District in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, blocked the Karakoram Highway for several hours on Saturday to protest what they called the government’s negligence to resolve the problem of power shortage in the region.
Blockage of the KKH left commuters stranded on both sides; a majority of them passengers travelling from Gilgit-Baltistan to Rawalpindi or vice versa. The passengers stranded at the blockage included children, women, the elderly and patients.
The protestors emerged from Kamilam, marching through the streets, finally staging a sit-in demonstration on the KKH, and bringing vehicles on the highway to a standstill. The demonstration leaders set a 2-week deadline for the government to cater to their demands, warning that they would block the KKH for an indefinite period if their demands are not met.
