MYRO and OEC organise workshop on Democracy/Human Rights/Peace-building in Rawalpindi for GB Activists

A  day-long workshop entitled “Democracy/Human Rights/Peace-building” for the youth activists of  Gilgit-Baltistan based in Islamabad and Rawalpindi was conducted at Rawalpindi today  . The workshop was organized by Mountain Youth Resource and Social Welfare Organization (MYRO), Organization for Educational Change(OEC) and  Mountain TV.


Youth from various academic backgrounds participated in the session in a large number. Students of the Media and Communication,Political  Science,Philosophy, Gender Studies,Engineering and other disciplines were  part of the session.



A main objective  of the training was to acquaint the participants with the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which was also reviewed in the context of Gilgit-Baltistan. Israr Uddin Israr, Provincial Coordinator HRCP GB,  gave presentation on human rights violations in Gilgit-Baltistan and discussed the political and constitutional situation of GB. In his detail presentation, the history of human rights, instruments of human rights,challenges to human rights in contemporary era were discussed thoroughly. The participants were made aware about the UDHR and conventions ratified by Pakistan.The role of Human Rights Commission of Pakistan in Gilgit-Baltistan was shared with the participants. The misconceptions about human rights were discussed in an interactive session.


Nisar Ahmed, Chairman MYRO discussed the role of democracy in contemporary and historical context. The salient features of democracy were reviewed and how democracy has evolved through complicated process. The four  different waves of democracy were discussed . Examples of some ideal liberal democracies were discussed and how Gilgit-Baltistan can move ahead in democratic transition. The model of emerging democratic countries like Taiwan,Hongkong, Malaysia and Indonesia were discussed. The success of democracy in Pakistan democracy and the flaws in the democratic process were also discussed in an interactive session. Further, it was discussed how to deepen democracy in Pakistan.

The activities in the session included lectures , questions and answers regarding human rights, democracy, and peacebuilding. Ms. Tajjali Abid, Chairperson Monitoring and Advisory council (M&A) of the OEC,President Sikandar Baig and  Imran Ahmed Hunzai, member M&A council and other members of OEC participated in the session. Kamran Ahmed, CEO MYRO, Amjad Ali,member core committee MYRO and Firdous Jamal, Operational Manager HBL ,Sost  Gojal were also present in the session.

At the end of the session,certificates were distributed among the participants.
