M.K.Zafar Iqbal (born in the high mountain village of Passu Gojal in 1951) moved to the metropolitan Karachi for further studies. Life was not so kind during his study in Karachi, he worked hard in a thread manufacturing to meet his daily ends and educational expenses. During his job in the facility, he lost his right hand finger, which was a cruel experience of his life.

Rather stepping back after such unkind experiences, he continued his journey towards his ultimate goal and that was his education.  He completed his Bachelor in Commerce (B. Com) from Karachi he later finished Bachelor of Law (LLB) from Karachi; he became Charted Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Logistic and Transport (FCILT).

During his studies he joined a movement with other students of Gojal, against corrupt and inhuman ruling system of Hunza state.  He among other youth of Gojal opposed Miri (kingship) system of Hunza and joined Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) during the era of Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto. He became 1st Secretary General of Pakistan People’s Party Hunza in 1972. He played vital role in political arena of the region, he along other strugglers succeeded to eliminate the ghastly Miri (kingship) system.

After completion of his education he joined Northern Area’s Transport Corporation (NATCO) as Controller of Finance & Accounts in 1979, it was a turning point of his life. Today NATCO is the only public sector corporation which runs successfully and has expanded its operation from Karachi to Kashsgar China.

His dedication, sincerity, and hardworking habit paved the path to the highest and most prestigious designation in NATCO. He became the Managing Director of NATCO in 1996. His matchless ability in transport industry convinced and won trust of his seniors which earned him success in form of rapid promotions.

His generous and selfless contribution in social circle remained praiseworthy; he worked with the most prestigious organization of Gilgit-Baltistan.  He served as a president Ismaili Regional Council Gilgit, Director Aga Khan Cultural Services Pakistan, Chairman Board of Governors Al-Azhar Model School Gilgit, Coordinator Aga Khan Economic Planning Board and many others.

He is the serving Director of The First Micro-Finance Bank, and Vice Chairman Karakoram Cooperative Bank, where they focus on socio-economic development of the area.

Book reading remained his passion; he has formed a personal library where he has collected some of the finest books regarding history, religion, people, poetry, and cultures. He has great knowledge of various subject fields which he gained from his vast experiences and study habit.

Working for transport facility his love for traveling remained high, so far he has been to China, Afghanistan, Thailand, Philippine, Hong-Kong Singapore, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Sri Lanka, England, Belgium, France, Syria, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Indonesia Malaysia and Egypt.

For now he is the serving Chairman of the Silk Route Dry Port Trust and Vice-Chairman of Pak-China Sust Port. There is hope that he will serve with true determination combined with his matchless experiences as the dry port will be a gateway to China, which is booming business giant of Asia.

He is considered as the most influential personality of Gilgit-Baltistan, and there is maximum possibility that he will join regional politics of Hunza valley.

Life ends for those who stop experiencing new things and there are people out there who never shy away from taking challenges and experience new things in life. Mr. Zafar Iqbal is one of a kind; who has faced challenges with great courage and ability.

I wish Mr. Zafar Iqbal good health, success and happiness in days ahead, may you be blessed always. Ameen.
