Gilgit: Is Assembly bill going to allow wine and beer in Giligit-Baltistan? is a hot topic roaming in the public sphere of Gilgit. . People are having cryptic view on the rumor. Students, businessmen and journalists were keen to know the reality about this rumor. The situation compelled Chief Minister GB, Hafiz ur Rehman to give statement and make it clear it to the people. Addressing a seminar he said .” Rumors are floating in Gilgit about pro alcohol legislation in the assembly. I want to make it clear that in the presence of Molvi Chief Minister and Haji speaker it is not possible to pass such bill in the assembly ,” But he did not make it clear that such bill is going to be moved in the assembly or not or is gossiped by lawmakers.
Wine used to be legal in Pakistan until 1977. Zulfikar Ali Bhutto prohibited the usage of alcohol under the pressure of religious factions in 1977, though himself being a big fond of drinking whisky.It is illegal for Muslims to consume alcohol but non Muslims and tourists can consume it with special permit. According to Express Tribune, 90% alcohol consumers in the country are Muslims and after the prohibition of 1977 the usage of alcohol has surprisingly increased in the country. Most of the bootleggers are Muslim who import and sell alcohol.
According to a report published few years back, around 10 million Pakistanis consume alcohol daily.
Pertain to note that, the 10 million figure is the one under the prohibition of consumption. Once it is legalized, the number will assuredly go up.
