The federal government has issued a terror alert to the government of Gilgit-Baltistan, saying militants can attack passenger vehicles on the main road connecting Gilgit with Ghizer. The interior ministry asked the GB government to boost up security on the road.
In its letter to the GB government, the interior ministry warned that sectarian clashes in the region could prompt yet again and a particular sect could be targeted by terrorists. It added that the militants have planned to disrupt peace in GB besides. The letter identified the terrorists as “trained residents of Gilgit.”
The interior ministry also particularly stated that the militants may strike passengers in Hainzal, situated around 25 kilometers from Gilgit.
It should be noted that the previous year more than 70 people were killed by terrorists in a number of incidents of sectarian hostility. A large number of them were passengers killed by terrorists on the Karakoram Highway (KKH).
