Gilgit: Court sends man to prison for domestic violence

GILGIT: A man found guilty of physically abusing his wife was sent to prison for two months. Executive Magistrate Gilgit Asghar Khan announced the judgment after listening to the complainant and the defendant.

The plaintiff (name withheld for privacy) had registered a case again her husband, accusing him of physically abusing her on a regular basis.

The court summoned her husband (name withheld for privacy), who admitted to torturing his wife. The magistrate announced a two-month long jail term for the man under section 107 and 108.

The GB government had committed to speeding and simplifying the provision of justice in the region. As such, it has established magistrate courts in the region.

Domestic abuse in Pakistan is an endemic social problem.

Overall, the prevalence of domestic violence in Pakistan ranges between 21pc and 50pc.
