Federal government planning to decrease wheat subsidy for GB

The federal government is planning to decrease the wheat subsidy for Gilgit Baltistan. The food department for Gilgit Baltistan has disagreed and acknowledges the federal government about the future food crises in Gilgit Baltistan.

The government is supplying wheat to the remote area of Gilgit Baltistan under the civil supply act and an unexpected decrease of this subsidy, which will deeply distorted markets and altered food production systems in Gilgit Baltistan and will start a new disaster in this already unstable area.

Subsidy on wheat was introduced in Gilgit Baltistan by Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto for the period of the 1970s in view of the region’s sky-scraping poverty index and lack of significant agricultural land and industrial zones.
