Disputed territory row: GB legislators seek help of top attorneys

News Desk

Legislators from Gilgit-Baltistan are seeking the help of top attorneys to defend what they called “legal assets of GB.” The lawmakers held a meeting in which they blasted Khyber Pakhtoonkhwa for what they termed as “infliction of injustices against GB.”

The ongoing row between the people of the Kohistan district of KPK and Diamer district of GB over a piece of land near the Dimaer Bhasha dam has put the future of the project at risk. Both sides have been claiming ownership of the disputed area. The federal government stepped in to resolve the issues between the two sides. A commission was also formed to look into the matter and come up with a comprehensive report.

GBLA legislators assured the people of GB that they would use all resources at their disposal to “safeguard the assets of GB.” They also asked the people to extend their full support to the government of GB to end the injustice being done by the people of Kohistan and to fight for the rights of the region. Lawmakers claimed that the property of Bhasha  Nullah, which happens to be the disputed area near the dam, belongs to the residents of the Thore Valley of Diamer.

The meeting attendants agreed over a resolution that held the claim of Kohistan District over the piece of land as “illegal.” Since the previous month, the people of GB and Kohistan have held several protests, each side claiming ownership of the disputed territory and blasting the other side.  Protestors even blocked the Karakoram Highway.
