Construction of the Karakoram Highway (KKH) in Gulmit has caused substantial environmental damage to forests as trees have been damaged by excavators and bulldozers.
The construction work started in Gulmit just a week ago and by now a majority of the trees have been completely pulled out and others severely damaged. Trees on the way of the highway were destined to be destroyed, but the excavators and bulldozers have even damaged and pulled out trees on both sides of the way.
Large areas around the road construction site have been destroyed that has had not only adverse environmental impact, but also economic cost to the owners. The excavator and bulldozer operations have destroyed properties of the local people in the surrounding of the construction site.
