Chitral: With the arrival of December, heavy snowfall has led to the closure of Lowari Pass for an indefinite period, crippling the life and livelihood of the people of Chitral.
Sources suggest that the harsh weather condition has made life harder for the people, who are spending their lives in suspended fear as the closure of the Lowari Pass has adversely affected their livelihood and movement. Supply of livelihood items and commodities to the region has also stopped as a result of the pass’ closure.
Authorities said the snowfall at the top was measured at six feet and residents said it is impossible for them to cross the Lowari Pass, even by foot. People complained that no government official or political representative has taken notice of the situation yet.
Meanwhile, MPA Saleem has told reporters that the Sombo Korean Construction Company, which is responsible for construction of the Lowari Tunnel, started the project in 2006 and was supposed to bring the tunnel into operation by 2009, but it failed to achieve its target due to the lack of funds.
