Chilas meeting: Diamer Jirga vows to help GB government tackle militancy

diamer quomi jirgaThe Diamer Quomi Jirga has once again vowed to extend full assistance to the government of Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) to eradicate militancy from the region, reports said Thursday.

Officials of the GB administration held a high level meeting with members of the Diamer Quomi Jirga in which both sides agreed to work in collaboration to craft a strategy to tackle terrorism in the region and bring the culprits involved in past terrorism incidents to justice. The Jirga agreed to help the government capture the culprits.

Reports said that Force Commander GB Hafiz Masroor, Inspector General GB Police Asim Bhatti and Chief Secretary GB Yunus Dhaga attended the high level meeting in addition to a number of other administration and security authorities.

According to reports, security officials also played video and audio criminal confessions of the already detained militants during the meeting at a rest house in Chilas.

It is pertinent to mention here that over the last one month, security officials have captured a number of suspects from various parts of Diamer and Kohistan, who were allegedly involved in the killing of foreign tourists at the Nanga Parbat base camp, travelers on the KKH and security personnel in Chilas. Sources said that the Diamer Jirga had earlier asked the government for clarifications on the detentions.

The Diamer Jirga, which is fully supported by the legislators from the Diamer valley, had been actively involved in assisting the GB government to arrest militants and criminals in the past. It had also permitted security officials to raid residences of suspected militants.
