The residents of Diamer district have blocked the Karakoram Highway, protesting over the boundary issue with Kohistan district. Traffic remained suspended on the KKH for a second successive day due to the demonstration.
According to sources, controversy over a piece of land in the area of Basari check post, the point where Khyber Pakhtunkhuwa and Gilgit Baltistan meet, triggered the demonstration.
A 10-kilometer land in the area has not been allocated to either sides, thus leading to the controversy and subsequent protest. People of Diamer district gathered at Shatial and threatened the government of KPK to keep away from destabilizing the area by dismantling the Basari check post forcefully.
The demonstrators were about 3,000 in number, who walked from Chilas to Basari check post, chanting slogans against the KPK government.
Sources said that the controversy basically triggered as an offshoot of the Diamer Bhasha Dam. The government of GB and that of KPK have been demanding royalty for the dam and a recent wave of rhetoric from KPK and Islamabad have added fuel to the fire.
