Boat Owners providing service at Attaabad Lake are on Strike

By Qasim Ali:

The boat owners providing service for commuters and businesses at the Attaabad Lake are on strike. People are having serious trouble to cross the lake while travelling from Gojal and Hunza and back.

The boat owners have called a strike due to the pressure of the civil administration which has imposed strict rules on them. Talking to MountainTV the boat owners said that the rules imposed by the Magistrate of Tehsil Gulmit, Mr. Mir Alam are not ideal for us. They also alleged that the Magistrate is targeting specific boat owners which is injustice.

According to the boat owners the the Magistrate has imposed the following rules for the boat owners, the boat owners will be responsible for,

  1. Any type of human accidents across the lake.
  2. Any type of vehicle accident across the lake.
  3. Providing life jackets for the passengers.
  4. Any accident with the Chinese goods transportation.

According to Mr. Farman Razi, traffic coordinator at the Gulmit Boat Basin, the attitude and behavior of the passengers along the journey with the boat operators is also one of the reason for today’s strike.

The boat owners told that the rules imposed are injustice with the boat owners as we are providing service from the last five years across the lake. They added that 3 boats will give service to to shift the passengers and one boat has been sent on emergency service to shift a delivery case to the spillway end of the lake.

The boat owners added that they will meet the Magistrate for Tehsil Gulmit and the strike will continue till the demands of the boat owners are fulfilled.
