Authorities have finally decided to facilitate mobility of the disaster-hit people of Gojal Valley and other travellers by letting them use the USAID donated Aqua Ambulances as regular ferry through the Attabad Lake.
The Deputy Commissioner of Hunza-Nagar Imran Sultan issued directives in this regard, after which the local administration promptly started the service. Mr. Sultan also visited Gojal to inspect the service.
People of the valley have appreciated the decision. It is pertinent to mention here that ferry across the landslide formed Attabad Lake becomes harsher and harder in winter due to extreme cold and windy weather. This service has come as relief to the people, said one traveller. Fares have been set at Rs. 70 for these boats.
The boats were donated by to the people of Gojal by USAID to be used as ambulance in the Attabad Lake. However, during the past year, the two boats, named Hunza 1 and Hunza 2, have been resting idle in the lake as their fuel consumption was higher and patients were unable to afford the fuel charges.
Meanwhile, local boat owners have protested against the decision, saying it is a blow to their business. They also shut down their service in the Attabad on Saturday as a protest against the government’s decision.
